I love San Diego in October. Even though we don’t get the full effects of fall as far as the weather, San Diego has a very different feeling too it after October 1st. From all the Oktoberfest activities and Halloween adventures to the Airshow, San Diego is the place to visit and experience Fall.

Right now off the coast of San Diego is the phenomena known as “Red tide“. The Red tide is a bio luminescent glow originating from phytoplankton (large qtys of plankton) in the waters off our coast. Some of the better spots to see this is La Jolla and Carlsbad. Of course the adventure begins around dusk.

Another great event is Oktsoldierfest. Not your typical Oktoberfest, Oktsoldierfest benefits the Warrior Foundation. Drinking beer, listening to live music that benefits our soldiers is a no brainer.

When you are done drinking beer, you need to pick up a Pumpkin. There are a ton of spots in San Diego for doing this, the best spot is Bates Nut Farm. Bates Nut Farm offers their humungous Pumpkin Patch, Hayride, Maze, Pony Rides, Petting Zoo, Picnic area and shopping. They are open every day from 9-5 from September 24th through Halloween. Call 760-749-3333 for more details.

Happy October! Sandiegolocales.com

The terms “Mardi Gras” (pronounced /ˈmɑrdiɡrɑː/), “Mardi Gras season”, and “Carnival season”,[1][2][3][4][5][6]in English, refer to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after Epiphany and ending on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday” (in ethnic English tradition, Shrove Tuesday), referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which started on Ash Wednesday. Related popular practices were associated with celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. Popular practices included wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition. In English, the day is called Shrove Tuesday, associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins.

A big draw to living in San Diego is the vast amount of desert to the east as a recreational destination. Many activities include hiking, camping, off road fun, star gazing and recreation for San Diegans to participate. The desert has massive amounts of appeal; it secures the user a sense of freedom and openness you can’t get anywhere else. Nothing beats building a nice big bonfire at a desert campground, listening to tunes and planning your next day’s ride.
But the freedom that desert users have experienced in the past is being taken away by the ever increasing scourge of law enforcement, property owners fencing off land, environmental protection and development.

One of the best areas to camp is in and around Ocotillo Wells. There are many places to visit and geographical areas that are interesting and educational for kids. Depending on the amount of creature comforts you desire, this area has several amenities that can help your stay. There are several stores close by to get supplies and ice. There are hot showers at Holmes Camp if you are running low on water and the infamous Iron Door offers some night life. Some RV parks have cropped up as well if you don’t want to take your RV off-roading.

ATV's enjoying the desert areas around San Diego and Imperial Counties

Anza- Borrego is a great place to see nature’s bounty. The flowers that bloom here are incredible and usually happen around Feb/Mar/April. There is so much to see and do here that a paragraph in this post will not do it justice. There are many animal species that call home here as well, Bighorn Sheep, Chuckwallas, Rattlesnakes and Desert Iguanas. Native American pictographs can be found depicting the past. And beautiful streams and waterfalls depending on the rainfall also can be found in this desert paradise. For more information on San Diego Desert destinations please Google or visit the links below.
