Here is an indispensable guide to Old Town from someone
who knows...I go there at least once a week!
There are so many things to do in Old Town, the list is
endless. If you travel to San Diego, you should at least
spend a whole day there!
My first Recommended restaurant spot is Old Town Mexican Cafe. They make the Best, freshest Tortilla's. Your best bet: (for breakfast) Pozole and Machaca con huevos with their Spicy Bloody Mary's.
Once
your belly is full, you should check out Cousins
Candy Store for Salt Water Taffy.
The best place to run around and let your kids blow off
steam (and sugar) is in the center of the park, Plaza de
las Armas or Washington Square. There is grass, trees a
canon, and a flag pole that kids like to climb all over.
While the kids are running around, the guys can check out
Racine and Laramie, a tobacco and men's accessorie store.
It is much more than that. It has a great selection of marbles
for kids and artifacts from the 1800's era. Historical photos
from San Diego and collections of lighters, minerals and
cigar boxes.
When
the group is back together, head over to Casa de Estudillo
Museum. The museum is located next to the square or across
from Cousin's. It has a beautiful courtyard featuring fountains,
native plants and a garden. The surrounding ranch style
home has rooms full of furniture from the 1800's that you
can peak into and glimpse California's past. If you head
towards the western corner adjacent to Calhoun Street, you
can take a restroom break.
